Based on archival documents, the work reconstructs the history, defines the conditions and main factors of the formation and development of the Department of Chemistry of the Komi Science Centre, Ural Branch, RAS, and the organization of the institute on its basis. The process of creating a specialized scientific unit in an academic institution began in the second half of the 1960s. It was determined that the main factors in the formation and development of the Department of Chemistry in the Komi Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences were the implementation of measures aimed at intensifying chemical research, in particular, the organization of targeted training and strengthening the material and technical base of scientific institutions, which were carried out within the frames of the state policy of accelerated development of the chemical industry in the country in the 1950-1960s, and the need for technological development of the industrial centers in the region. The activities of scientists in the 1960–1990s were focused on the creation of theoretical foundations, schemes and technologies for the comprehensive processing of local mineral and wood raw materials, the production of functional ceramic and composite materials. Representatives of the academic community contributed to the formation of scientific potential, which served as the necessary basis for the organization of the Institute of Chemistry of the Federal Research Centre Komi Science Centre, Ural Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences.
